Summary: We now live between two advents: the first advent of Jesus, come to earth to be born, live, die, be buried, yet rise again; and the second advent of Jesus’ bodily return to earth to make all things new and wipe away evil from our midst. Between these two advents we live and grow in peace, two kinds of peace. There is objective peace and subjective peace. Jesus provides objective peace with God through his sacrifice of peace on the cross, our reconciliation with God, and our adoption into his family—in this we have objective peace with God despite our fluctuating feelings. We grow in subjective peace by his grace. That is growing in being at peace with others and peace with ourselves. The Spirit intends for us to grow in subjective peace as far as it depends on us. How this subjective peace is cultivated is what we will uncover in the final part of this sermon.
