Summary: What is “baptism”? Why must a follower of Jesus be baptized? What is the meaning of “baptism”? Is it necessary for salvation? These are central questions we will answer.
Baptism is the primary activity that establishes that we are made new (regenerate) and are part of God’s family (adopted children). The inner baptism of the Spirit regenerates our fallen, dead human spirit that results in a new birth or “new life” that flows from the inside out, “bubbling over” as Jesus said to the woman at the well (John 4).
Water baptism is the external sign and symbol that declares to the public that we are now a changed soul, to be identified with Christ and his people and to live with the hope and promise of resurrection.
